Colombian President Gustavo Petro is at the center of a political storm following the revelation that allegedly illicit funds may have entered his 2022 election campaign.

The information came to light after his son, Nicolás Petro Burgos, disclosed to the prosecutor’s office.

Several politicians, including right-wing presidential candidate Federico Gutiérrez, questioned the legitimacy of Petro’s government and called for an in-depth investigation.

Gutiérrez asserted on social media that a process must be initiated to restore Colombians’ confidence in democracy. He emphasized that what’s illegitimate cannot remain.

Sergio Fajardo, another former presidential candidate, described the testimony as a bomb that shakes the foundations of democracy, putting Petro’s government and policies in question.

In Congress, Senator Jonathan Pulido Hernández filed a complaint against Petro with the House of Representatives Investigation and Accusation Committee.

Former presidents Andrés Pastrana and César Gaviria also expressed their concerns, with Gaviria emphasizing that political reaction must adhere to the Constitution’s principles.

Petro’s allies, on the other hand, came to his defense.

Senator María José Pizarro of the ruling Pacto Histórico party stated that Petro has been a relentless critic of corruption, and she expressed full trust in his integrity and democratic spirit.

Others in the government also expressed confidence in the president, citing his incorruptibility.

Two months before being elected president, Petro himself had tweeted a warning about a plan to infiltrate his campaign with drug money, urging vigilance.

As the situation unfolds, both support and criticism continue to pour in, reflecting the divisiveness of the allegations.

The issue is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in Colombia, raising questions about the legitimacy of the current government and the country’s democratic processes.
