Asteroid City Cast & Crew
Asteroid City features an ensemble cast made up of some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Jason Schwartzman, who has worked with Wes Anderson before, is the lead star in the film. He’s joined by Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson, who are also important to the story. The film is set in a fictional town where so many different characters pop up. That opens the door for appearances from the rest of the A-list cast including Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schrieber, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Jeff Goldblum, Fisher Stevens, Rita Wilson, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, Jarvis Cocker, Hope Davis, Matt Dillon, Rupert Friend, and Stephen Park.
Wes Anderson directed Asteroid City, his 11th directorial feature in his career. He’s a 7-time Oscar nominee for his previous works including The Royal Tenebaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Isle of Dogs. Wes’s movies feature unique narratives and visuals that are alive and well in Asteroid City.
Wes also wrote the screenplay for Asteroid City and serves as a producer with Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson. The creative team also includes cinematographer Robert Yeoman, editor Barney Pilling, and music composer Alexandre Desplat. They have all worked on Wes Anderson movies before.

In the trailer for Asteroid City, Jason Schwartzman’s character is stranded in the town with his four children. He calls his father-in-law, played by Tom Hanks, and asks him to pick them up. Jason’s character bonds in Asteroid City with a gorgeous woman played by Scarlett Johansson. His son, played by Jake Ryan, becomes involved in the town’s Junior Stargazer convention. Asteroid City ends up under quarantine after a UFO seemingly arrives.
“I don’t like the way that guy looked at us, the alien,” Jason’s character says to Scarlett’s through a window. “Like we’re doomed.” He also reveals that he’s a widower, setting the stage for a potential new romance. But that might not sit well with Tom Hanks’ character. “In my loneliness, I have learned to give complete and unquestioning math in the people I love,” he says. “I don’t know if that includes you, but it included my daughter and your four children.”
What Is Asteroid City About?
The official synopsis for Asteroid City reads, “The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention — organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition — is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.”
The romance between Jason Schwartzman and Scarlett Johansson’s characters is definitely going to be a major storyline in the film. Wes Anderson has stayed pretty quiet about what fans can expect from his new movie, which is par for the course for the famous director. But if there’s one thing we do know, it’s that Wes will certainly include his signature movie themes of grief and family drama in Asteroid City.
